Citizens Coalition Opposes Proposed Sales Tax Increase

A grassroots organization calling itself "Wichita Taxpayers United" has launched a petition drive against the city council's proposal to increase the local sales tax from 7.5% to 8.0%. The coalition has gathered over 12,000 signatures in just two weeks.

The proposed tax increase would generate an estimated $15 million annually for infrastructure improvements, including street repairs and water main replacements. However, opponents argue the tax burden would disproportionately affect low-income residents and hurt local businesses competing with online retailers.

Koch Industries Wins Dismissal in Minnesota Environmental Lawsuit

A Minnesota federal judge dismissed a $250 million environmental lawsuit against Koch Industries subsidiary Georgia-Pacific, ruling that plaintiffs failed to establish direct causation between the company's paper mill operations and alleged groundwater contamination.

Judge Patricia Morrison granted summary judgment in favor of Georgia-Pacific, finding that the environmental testing data presented by plaintiffs was "insufficient and methodologically flawed." The ruling represents a significant victory for Koch Industries in what had been one of the largest environmental cases pending against the company.

Environmental advocacy groups criticized the decision and indicated they are evaluating options for appeal. Koch Industries released a statement reaffirming their commitment to environmental stewardship and compliance with all applicable regulations.
